Sometimes the “green areas” in big cities are not enough to mitigate this pollution, and in response, a new invention called the “liquid tree” has emerged.

The device, designed by the Multidisciplinary Research Institute of the University of Belgrade, provides an innovative application for microbes that, like common trees, convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into oxygen and fulfill the function of purifying the air.

Its official category, the Urban Bioreactor, was first installed in Serbia's capital city of Belgrade under the name “Liquid 3”.

Each of these devices has a sequestration capacity (the process by which they absorb CO2) equivalent to 400 trees, their creators explained.

If we take into account UN statistics that estimate that a mature tree can absorb up to 150 kilograms of polluting gases per year, a “liquid tree” is enough to “clean” 60 tons of these gases annually.

On the other hand, it does not require special maintenance. Since this device has a microalgae fish tank, remove excess biomass, a product of algae reproduction, refresh the water with specific minerals, and repeat this process every month.

The creators of “Liquid 3” have noted that this innovation will not change urban vegetation or “change forests”. “We use this method to fill in urban areas where there is no space to plant trees,” they say.
