The former mayor of a town in South Dakota, USA, has been charged with three counts of murder, state Attorney General Marty Jackley was quoted as saying by CBS News on Tuesday.
Jay Ostrem is being held on $1 million cash bail in Minneha County. They report that he worked in law enforcement for more than two decades in Wyoming and South Dakota. He later became mayor of Centerville in 2009 and resigned in 2011. Additionally, he faced a federal sexual harassment lawsuit during his tenure.
According to a press release from authorities, the homicides in Centerville were reported around 10:00 PM (local time) on Monday. The legal report identified the victims as two brothers aged 26 and 21 and a 35-year-old man.
Before dying, one of the victims called 911 to report that his cousin had been shot “by a guy from across the street,” and said he had also been shot. Ostrem was arrested shortly after.
The former mayor’s wife told police that a neighbor named Paul raped her last week and told Ostrem what happened Monday night. After that, her husband “got up and left the house,” she said.
Officers found an AR rifle on the ground next to him, and he had a handgun in his pocket. Later, they went to the address where the call came from and found the three victims.
