The US considers the demand for Netanyahu’s arrest “intolerable”.

Regardless of what the lawyer says, the president insisted that “no comparison between Israel and Hamas is possible.”

This Monday, the United States described as “intolerable” and “shameful” an International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor’s request for war crimes arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders.

“The ICC Prosecutor’s request for an arrest warrant against Israeli leaders is outrageous,” US President Joe Biden said in a White House statement.

The president vowed that the United States would always support the Jewish state in the face of “threats to its security,” despite the attorney general’s assertion that “no comparison is possible between Israel and Hamas.”

ICC Attorney General Karim Khan on Monday sought arrest warrants against Netanyahu and his Defense Minister Yoav Galant, Hamas leader Yahya Shinwar and his politburo Ismail Haniyeh for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

The United States does not recognize the Rome Statute under which the ICC was established and has traditionally opposed the body’s various investigations.

“We reject equality of arms between Israel and Hamas. It’s shameful,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in another statement.

The head of US diplomacy said that “Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization” that on October 7 “carried out the worst massacre since the Holocaust and still holds dozens of people hostage.”

Likewise, Blinken opined that the ICC lacked jurisdiction in the matter and condemned the investigation as having “deeply troubling procedural problems.”

According to the foreign secretary, the Israeli government was “willing to cooperate” despite the fact that Israel is not part of the court, and a visit by the ICC attorney general to the Jewish state was even planned for next week.

Still, Blinken continued, a legal team unexpectedly canceled a trip to Israel this Monday while Khan appeared on television to announce the charges.

“These and other circumstances call into question the fairness and credibility of this investigation,” he said.

And for the US diplomatic chief, the ICC prosecutor’s decision “could endanger” negotiations between Israel and Hamas on a cease-fire in Gaza and an agreement to release kidnapped people.

Karim Khan’s request angered Israeli officials and leaders of the Palestinian Islamist group on Monday.
