In a historic milestone, Russian gas giant Gazprom and the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) on Wednesday signed a major strategic memorandum to increase natural gas supplies via pipelines from Russia to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This strategic agreement seeks to establish mutually beneficial long-term cooperation between the two parties, laying the foundation for a large-scale project in the natural gas sector.

The signing ceremony took place during a visit to the Iranian territory by a Gazprom delegation headed by company president Alexei Miller.

The event was attended by Iran’s Interim President Mohammad Moghar, and within the framework of this important meeting, Alexey Miller also held a meeting with Iranian Oil Minister Javad Ovji. During these meetings, priority measures for the implementation of the signed strategic memorandum and various areas of cooperation in the energy sector between Russia and Iran were discussed.

Facing tough Western sanctions, the Islamic Republic of Iran has expressed interest in developing its vast oil and gas resources. As part of this strategy, last year it announced the construction of a gas distribution center at Asaluye Industrial Area, located in the southern province of Bushehr.

The agreement between Gazprom and Iran’s NIGC opens new doors for energy cooperation between the two countries, strengthening ties and promoting the development of the natural gas industry in the region.
