UN says food availability in Gaza is “worse” after Israeli operation in Rafah

Gaza is facing a “dire” food situation as more than 300 aid trucks have entered the enclave since Israel launched its offensive in Rafah, UN humanitarian agency OCHA said on Friday.

“More than 3,000 metric tons of food in key warehouses have become inaccessible to food security partners,” OCHA said, adding that “limited supplies have arrived in Gaza since May 6. And insufficient to meet growing needs.”

Israeli forces captured the Palestinian area of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt on May 7.

OCHA reported that the situation in Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah is worsening as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians flee to the two districts to escape Israeli operations in Rafah.

“Between May 6 and 16, according to the UN, nearly 640,000 people were displaced from Rafah, including about 40,000 displaced on May 16. According to the Shelter Cluster, there are no shelter supplies inside Gaza,” the report said.

And aid must be allowed to pass through checkpoints and enter Gaza by land. The company insisted.

“Any aid reaching Gaza is welcome in any way. However, getting aid to people in need inside and outside Gaza should not depend on floating docks,” OCHA spokesperson Jens Lark said on Friday.
