Blackmagic Camera makes its Android debut for Pixel and Galaxy devices

Blackmagic, a popular camera brand, has just launched a camera app for Android to provide professional video recording controls, but only on select devices.

Announce today, the new Blackmagic Camera app brings professional video recording controls to the camera that’s always at your fingertips – the one on your phone. The app is designed to offer precise manual controls for video recording as well as display more details such as “status and recording parameters, histogram, focus peaking, levels, frame guides, and more.”

The app can record in H.264 and H.265 formats and integrates with Blackmagic’s cloud services so clips can be shared and discussed with editors and collaborators. Clips can also be shared directly with DaVinci Resolve.

The Blackmagic Camera media tab contains all the controls needed to browse or scan clips for quick review, search, sort, and view their media upload status. Customers can also link to their DCIM folder and choose clips to upload to Blackmagic Cloud. Simply access their media from the All Clips folder in Blackmagic Camera by selecting the Media button to see thumbnails of each clip customers have stored. Customers can save their media to the My Drive folder on the phone, send it to Blackmagic Cloud Storage via Blackmagic Cloud or manually choose which clips will be uploaded to the project library. Customers can also sync media from Blackmagic Camera directly into a DaVinci Resolve project so users are ready for editing and color grading.

A great feature of the app is the “Stealth” mode that allows 16:9 video recording even while holding the device vertically.

The application is free.

It is worth noting that availability is limited. Blackmagic says the app should work on Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices, but even then, we’ve noticed that it can’t be installed on certain devices like the Google Pixel Fold.

You can download Blackmagic Camera at Google Play Store today.
