Nike’s Olympic track and field uniforms are sparking controversy
Nike’s new track and field uniforms for the Paris 2024 Olympics are sparking controversy among critics and fellow athletes.
EUGENE, Ore. – Sydney McLaughlin-Lefron continued her dominance in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, setting (another) world record Sunday at Hayward Stadium in the USA Track & Field Olympic Trials final. McLaughlin-Levron crossed the finish line in 50.65 seconds, then covered her mouth in shock at the sight of her time.
McLaughlin-Levrone’s previous world record, also set at Hayward Field, was 50.68, which she ran at the 2022 world championships.
“Honestly, thank God, I wasn’t expecting that,” McLaughlin Levrone said in the post-race telecast. “All things are possible in Christ. I’m amazed, amazed and shocked.”
Anna Cockerill (52.64) was second and Jasmine Jones (52.77) third and will join McLaughlin-Levron in Paris.
Dalila Muhammad, who won gold in Rio and silver in Tokyo, came in sixth.
McLaughlin Levrone is the reigning gold medalist in the 400-meter hurdles, and every time she lines up on the track she sets a new world record. Not only is she the favorite to win in Paris, but she is expected to win by a large margin.
McLaughlin-Lefron will likely be on the 4×400 team as well; She ran the first leg of the relay at the Tokyo Olympics, leading the Americans to the gold medal.
USA Track & Field is expected to announce the relay team groups by July 8.
McLaughlin Levrone was considering running the 400-meter hurdles and 400-meter dashes, but the current Olympic track schedule doesn’t allow for that. Sometimes it seems like McLaughlin Levrone might win, or at least compete for a medal, in any of the sprint events. By Sunday morning, she had set the sixth-fastest time in the 200 meters this season, which she achieved in Los Angeles in May.
