The Olympic track and field uniform produced by Nike raises controversy
The new sportswear that Nike will introduce for the 2024 Paris Olympics has sparked widespread controversy among critics and fellow athletes.
EUGENE — Gabby Thomas, Brittany Brown and Mackenzie Long are headed to Paris to compete in the women’s 200 meters after finishing 1-2-3 at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials Saturday at Hayward Field.
Thomas won in 21.81 seconds, and Brown was second with a personal best time of 21.90 seconds. Long clocked 21.91 seconds.
Shakari Richardson placed fourth in the finals with a time of 22.16 seconds. Richardson won the 100 meters in the qualifying trials to secure her place on the Olympic team in Paris. She did not speak to reporters after Saturday’s race.
Thomas, the bronze medalist in the event, set a world record of 21.78 seconds on Friday in the semifinals, surprising herself. She said after the race that she wouldn’t be surprised if she ran her personal best on Saturday, but she narrowly missed that mark.
Both Americans will be strong contenders for medals in Paris, given that Jamaican star Elaine Thompson-Hera, the Olympic champion in the 100 and 200 meters, announced last week that she had withdrawn from the Jamaican trials due to a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Long, a star at Ole Miss, ran the best time in the world this season — which she set in Eugene at the NCAA Championships on June 8 — before Thomas posted a faster time in the semifinals. Long, who also competed in the 100m here but did not make the final.
